What I love: It’s not easy to get a 10-year-old boy to read when he’s got Xbox, a tablet, TV, etc., so you can imagine how thrilled I was when my son would get excited to read the “Henry and Mudge” series. Just last night, as I was preparing to write this review, he was showing me the books saying, “This is my favorite. This is my second favorite. This one is about a sleepover. I wish I had the entire series!” It’s also cute that Mudge is and English mastiff, as my son grew up with two. The illustrations are very colorful and fun, and the diversity of the supporting characters is good (both in terms of race and age).
What I’d change: I wish this series grew with my son! It’s really designed for second- and third-graders (although some say they’re for 5- to 7-year-olds). He’s in fourth and could probably use something a bit more challenging.
