What it is: Fat Brain Toys website dedicated to selling quality toys that educate and entertain.
Brain Benefits: This online store offers toys to help with a variety of special needs. There’s an entire section called Special Needs Resource Center that offers categories of toys based on the feedback from customers whose children with special needs have used them. The categories range from ADHD, autism and developmental delay to learning disabilities, sensory integration disorder and traumatic brain injury (and everything in between). For example, if you go into the ADHD category, you’ll see toys that build attention skills, as well as other weak cognitive skills that we know now show up as clusters in people with ADHD.
What I love: This may be the only site I use for Christmas shopping for my kids! It’s easy to navigate thanks to the tabs at the top that let you shop by age, best sellers, new releases, categories (e.g., early learning toys, books, STEM toys), interests (e.g., dragons, hockey, fairy tales) and American Made. Of course, you can go into one category and then narrow that down even more by price, age, gender, customer rating, etc. One of most impressive claims is that Fat Brain Toys has the largest selection of American-made toys anywhere. There’s also a Gift Bot that lets you use sliders to adjust your criteria for finding the perfect toy when you don’t have a clue. There’s also a toy catalog and a pretty interesting blog.
What I would change: It would be nice to see toys sorted by specific cognitive skills, such as attention, memory, logic & reasoning, and visual and auditory processing.
